It lies 14 miles (23 km) north of Manchester, 22 miles (35 km) east of Preston, and 35 miles (56 km) southeast of the county town of Lancaster. According to the 2001 census, Bacup had a population of 12,763. Nearby towns include Rawtenstall to the west, Burnley to the north, Accrington to the northwest and Rochdale to the south.
